D he Italian design company Icona wanted to create a unique sports car. One that has never existed in this form before. For inspiration, the Italians looked outside the box. And got stuck with the fastest aircraft in the world: the Blackbird SR-71.
We are certainly not jet experts. But in a nutshell, a few basic data on the reconnaissance aircraft: There are a total of 32 copies. Of these, 12 had an accident because the aircraft, which was operating at an altitude of 25 kilometers until 1998, is said to have been extremely difficult to fly - at a maximum speed of over 3,500 km / h per hour, it is easy to imagine. The Blackbird SR-71 made the route London - New York in less than two hours.
Expensive titanium at Icona Vulcano
The icona designers took over the breathtaking jet. So they built their Vulcano, which was exhibited in Pebble Beach 2015, out of the same material: titanium. However, the creators of the one-off added a little carbon.
Titanium is one of the most stable and lightest metals (about half as heavy as stainless steel) in the world. In short: a dream for engineers. But titanium is also very expensive and complex to manufacture. Which, of course, makes those who have to hold the money together in a company pissed off. Icona whistled and had the titanium-steeled body of the Vulcano manufactured by the Italian company Cecomp in 10,000 hours of manual work. As proof, the super sports car was left colorless.
With the Icona Vulcano Titanium, the makers show a clear edge. Sharp beads dominate the body of the sports car. It starts with the bonnet with two beads that extend into the side doors and continues in this form over the roof to the rear. The extroverted grill with three horizontal slats and a spoiler lip as well as the large air inlets in the front apron and the generous outlets on the fenders are also characteristic.

Vulcano should be able to have over 1,000 hp
In the At the rear, the Icona Vulcano Titanium impresses with a small spoiler lip that is drawn together from two beads, futuristic lights and a large diffuser with a central exhaust. A 6.2-liter V8 supercharger derived from the Corvette ZR1 works there - with additional air supplied through a crescent-shaped opening. In a first version, which was presented at the Shanghai Auto Show 2013, the Icona also had a V12 and two electric motors.
As a performance of the V8, which was under the care of Claudio Lombardi - ex-technical director the Scuderia Ferrari in the 1990s - was created, calls Icona 670 PS and 840 Nm. A Corvette ZR1 has 647 hp. On request, the V8 Vulcano can also boil over 1,000 hp through the square exhaust system.
In its standard configuration, the Vulcano should run to 60 miles per hour (96.56 km / h) in 2.8 seconds and the 120 mp / h limit (193.12 km / h) in Blow up 8.8 seconds. Icona specifies a top speed of over 350 km / h. This would mean that the jet model would be ten times faster, but the Vulcano would still be at the forefront of sports cars.
The price of the titanium sports car is 2.8 million dollars. That corresponds to over 2.5 million euros. Those who want to admire the Icona Vulcano Titanium have the opportunity to attend Salon Privè 2016 in Blenheim Palace near Woodstock (Great Britain).
